liquid volumes. Magic

The next practice we will take measurements of volume with the probe and the pipette while we make a fun experience.

start from a known volume of tap water and do a trick "magic." Consist of changing the water glass and appear to be transformed into wine. To move the contents to a third vessel, appear to be transformed into C oca-Cola. In the first conversion, which occurs is that potassium permanganate, which is deep violet, dissolved in water. In the second conversion, hydrogen peroxide reduces the permanganate ion (violet color) to MnO 2 , yellowish solid that remains in suspension. In addition, oxygen is evolved gas. This oxygen, which is responsible for the bubbles, is essential in combustion and that is why if we bring a small flame to an atmosphere rich in this gas, it will burn more vivacity. The chemical reaction that takes place is:
2 KMnO 4 + 2 H 2 O 2 -> 2 MnO 2 + 2 KOH + 2 H 2 O + 2 O 2 -

MATERIAL

Three beakers, graduated cylinder, 100 ml, 2 ml pipette, pear security filter paper.
Products:
Potassium permanganate (KMnO 4 ), concentrated hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2). PROCEDURE

Make a small stick about 10 cm long wrapped with filter paper. Leave it ready. Leave
the first glass clean.
Put a few pieces of solid potassium permanganate in the second beaker.
Measured 4 ml of hydrogen peroxide with a pipette and pour into the third beaker.
Measure 100 ml of water with the specimen and Transfer it to the first beaker.

water passes first to the second vessel. Observe and record what happens. Repeat the process
content from the second to the third glass. Observe and record what happens. Turns
cane and Bring it to the beaker near the bubbles. You must hurry and do this before the end of the reaction and hence bubbles are exhausted Observe and record what happens.
